Are you an experienced Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider (APP) ready to lead in a high-acuity, collaborative environment? UPMC Horizon Shenango Valley is seeking a Senior Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Neonatal Physician Assistant with strong delivery room experience to join our dedicated Newborn Medicine team.

This Flexible Full-Time position is your opportunity to work in a  Level II Special Care Nursery that delivers over 1,000 babies annually, providing critical care to newborns in a supportive, rural Pennsylvania setting—just a short drive from Pittsburgh.

The Senior Neonatal APP is responsible for providing inpatient care services in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This includes evaluation and management of neonatal patients and performing procedures as needed. Follow established standards and practices when performing these duties. Set the standards for the level and quality of care. Responsibility and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. Provide patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Senior Neonatal APP encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. Establish and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. Demonstrate a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession. The successful candidate will be placed according to years and months of experience for employment purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in determining conditions, resources and policies basic to the delivery of high-quality health care of the high risk newborn.
  • \n
  • Elicits, records, and interprets a complete health history, including past medical, obstetrical, family and psychosocial aspects.
  • \n
  • Performs comprehensive physical assessment of the newborn/infant, appropriately orders and accurately interprets laboratory, radiographic and clinical data and communicates significant findings to the health care team (nursing, fellows, faculty and consultant).
  • \n
  • Discusses and coordinates the plan of care and procedures with the patient's primary nurse, Neonatology Faculty, Fellows and consultants.
  • \n
  • Performs comprehensive physical assessment of the newborn/infant, appropriately orders and accurately interprets laboratory, radiographic and clinical data and communicates significant findings to the health care team (nursing, fellows, faculty and consultant).
  • \n
  • Maintain clinical competency and keep informed of current trends and developments in neonatal nursing and related medical progress through continuing education and review of the literature.
  • \n
  • Contributes to the body of medical and nursing knowledge through collaborative and independent research and publication.
  • \n
  • Initiate emergency evaluation and treatment.
  • \n
  • Participate in the planning and presentation of continuing education programs for in-house medical and nursing personnel, referral hospital personnel and future RN's and Neonatal CRNP's.
  • \n
  • Serve as a resource outside the hospital system in areas where his/her expertise can provide a community service.
  • \n
  • Accurately and comprehensively documents the plan of care and course of management through the interim, discharge, and transfer summaries.
  • \n
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional development that improves the quality of professional practice and the quality of patient care.
  • \n
  • Regularly performs high level, invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as umbilical line placement, intubation, lumbar puncture, chest tube placement and PICC line insertions as are necessary for the care of the patient. Such procedures are carried out in accordance with established policies, regulatory guidelines and patient safety protocols.

  • Makes appropriate referrals in consultation with the attending physician for medical consultations, supportive services and regulatory reporting of patient safety issues.
  • \n
  • Provides support as well as information regarding the infant's condition, progress, and plans for care to parents/family, referring and consulting physicians.
  • \n
  • Facilitates and/or participates in internal and /or external neonatal transports.
  • \n
  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult teaching principles (and/or teaching of children as applicable) and applies these when teaching patients, families, students and new staff.
  • \n
  • Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry and continuous improvement by asking for feedback and improving practice.
  • \n
  • Supports the development of students, new staff and colleagues.
  • \n
  • Leads and/or actively participates on interdisciplinary committees.
  • \n
  • Develops internal and external customer relationships (medical staff, employees, patients and parents, payers). Identifies customer needs, develops system to monitor satisfaction, and develops operating plans to address areas of dissatisfaction.
  • \n
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures necessary for the care of the patient. Such procedures are carried out in accordance with established protocols and after verifying patient name and birthdate.
  • \n
  • Record and dictate interim, discharge, and transfer summaries.
  • \n
  • Provide support as well as information regarding the infant's condition, progress, and plan for care to parents/family, referring and consulting physician.
  • \n
  • Regularly perform high level invasive procedures such as umbilical line placement.
  • \n
  • Serve as a member of Nursing and Medical committees as indicated.
  • \n
  • Participate in Neonatal transports from referral hospital by ground and/or air.
  • \n
  • Complies with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

  • Completion of an Accredited Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program (MSN or DNP).
  • \n
  • NCC Certification.
  • \n
  • Eligible for RN licensure by Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
  • \n
  • Eligible for NNP licensure by Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
  • \n
  • BLS or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation required based on AHA standards that include both didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • \n
  • NRP certification listed must meet AAAP standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • \n
  • ECMO competence required within 1 year of hire (Required at CHP)

Neonatal Physician Assistant

  • 1 year level III or IV NICU PA experience or completion of a 9-month post-graduate residency/fellowship in neonatology required. 
  • \n
  • Graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
  • \n
  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • \n
  • Eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or State Board of Osteopathy
  • \n
  • BLS or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation required based on AHA standards that include both didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
