The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is looking to hire a full-time Archives Technician. The Archives Technician will provide support to the Archivist through processing and maintaining collections in the archive. This includes common archival practices such as: accession, arrangement, and description of archival and manuscript collections, as well as assisting with the digitization of Distinctive Collections materials, participating in and implementing collection surveys, and creating inventory records and finding aids using archives content management software. This position is designed to support the use of the Archive by community members and the public at large.

Duties:

  • Processes new and existing collections following guidelines as delineated by the Archivist and current best practices and procedures. This work entails, accessioning, arranging, and describing collections, writing brief descriptions of collections, providing bibliographical data, assigning Library of Congress subject headings, and integrating new and existing finding aids into the Archives database. Helps maintain administrative collection files and records.
  • Preserve and keep records intact, and ensure that they are maintained and kept properly per Archive standards and best practices.
  • Careful processing of records based on Processing Plans for each collection of varying degrees of preservation required, and implementation of MPLP.
  • Use and generate different retention schedules and follow accordingly with destruction and deaccession of items.
  • Assists in the creation of exhibits. This will entail: Contributing textual and visual content to analog and digital projects (including departmental web pages) in collaboration with other administrative divisions
  • Creating metadata for materials to be scanned according to specified protocols and schema
  • Assists in the design and layout of exhibits, both physical and virtual
  • Conducts internal and public research requests per standards and privacy regulations of the Archive.
  • Participating in committees and teams within and outside the Archive, particularly those related to archival processing and preservation, and digital projects.
  • Maintaining helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all archive patrons internally and externally; using good communication skills to relay progress of projects both within and outside the department when necessary
  • Maintaining archive supply inventory per PAR levels.
  • Assisting with stacks management across the Archive’s various storage facilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Experience with using Excel or proven competency with using a computer efficiently and effectively.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with faculty and staff
  • Ability to work efficiently and cheerfully in a busy, multi-tasking, and rapidly changing knowledge-providing environment
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and shifting priorities as driven by operational, developmental, and managerial needs
  • Ability to work under limited supervision– self-starter
  • Commitment to user-centered library services
  • Knowledge and experience with archival and records management practices and procedures including archival description,
  • Experience with Archival Management Software.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
  • Skill to use a computer and various software packages including Microsoft Office and Email.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds

Working Conditions:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside. While the position is primarily sedentary and inside, infrequently work is required outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
